What is the requirement to be a member of the Kuala Lumpur Bar?
A
:
You have to be an Advocate & Solicitor practising in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur and hold a valid Practising Certificate.
 
Q
:
How do I join the KL Bar?
A
:
You will have to give notification to the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee (KLBC) and pay your annual subscription to the KLBC. Log on to the KLBC Membership Services to access the Notice of Intention to Commence Legal Practice in Kuala Lumpur. Complete and submit the Notice online. Information on the subscription payable and method of payment can be found in the Notice.

Must I notify the Bar Council or any other State Bar Committee of my commencement of practice in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur?
A
:
Yes, you must notify the Bar Council. In respect of other State Bar Committees, you need to only notify the State Bar Committee where you have practised in prior to moving to Kuala Lumpur.

Can I be a member of the KL Bar if I am not in practice or practising in another State?
A
:
No, you can’t but you may choose to be on the mailing list and/or e-mail database of the KLBC to receive notices/circulars/bulletins issued/published by the KLBC. The fee payable to the KLBC for providing the said service is RM50.00. Send a letter to the KL Bar Secretariat of your intention to be on the mailing list and/or e-mail database and provide your forwarding address and e-mail address together with a cheque for RM50.00 made payable to KUALA LUMPUR BAR COMMITTEE.

Do I need to be registered as a member of the KL Bar if I am practising in another State which firm has a branch office in Kuala Lumpur?
A
:
Yes, if you are a partner. No, if you are a legal assistant.

How do I notify the KLBC if I change my place of practice?
A
:
You may use the “Members Info” online form located on the KLBC Website. Fill in the form and e-mail (rajan@klbar.org.my), mail or fax (26911090) the KL Bar Secretariat. See “Contact Us” on the KLBC website for the KLBC contact details.

How do I notify the KLBC if I change my contact numbers?

You may personally change your contact numbers via the KLBC Membership Services. To have access to the facility, you are required to register online at the KLBC Membership page to obtain a username and password.

Subscription

When is subscription due?
A
:
Immediately after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the KL Bar which is held in February each year.

How would I know the amount fixed for subscription?
A
:
A notice will be issued to all KL Bar members after the AGM or you may check the KLBC Website under “Admission”. You may also log on to the KLBC Membership Services to download your subscription remittance slip. To have access to the facility, you are required to register online at the KLBC Membership page to obtain a username and password.

When is the last day to pay the annual subscription?
A
:
30th June of each year.

:
Do I get a refund if I do not practise in KL for the whole year?
A
:
You will get a refund of 50% of the subscription paid only if you practise for less than 6 months in a calendar year in KL and moving to practise in another State and are required to pay another subscription to that State Bar Committee for that year. Refund will only be given upon request in writing. There will be no refund for members who leave practice.

Do I need to pay my subscription to the KLBC if I move to another State to practise?
A
:
Yes. If you have practised for 6 months and below in a calendar year in KL, you are required to pay only 50% of the subscription fixed for the year. If you have practised for more than 6 months, you are required to pay the full subscription.
