Notes of Meeting between KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee and the Kuala Lumpur Prosecution Unit of the Attorney General`s Chambers on 05.05.2010

A meeting was held between the KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee (CPC) and the Kuala Lumpur Prosecution Unit of the Attorney General’s Chambers on 5 May 2010.

Arising from the said meeting members of the KL Bar are advised of the following:-

a.         Section 51A of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Ø  The CPC has requested for the documents to be furnished early.

Ø  The Prosecution Unit is aware of this issue and in most cases will furnish documents as early as possible.

Ø  Members should consider accepting scanned documents as photocopying of documents are costly.

Ø  That in cases involving transfer of lawyers the lawyer taking over should obtain documents from the previous lawyer handling the matter.

b.         Fresh Charges

Ø  The CPC has requested for cases involving fresh charges be conducted before 12pm.

Ø  The Prosecution Unit will try to accommodate the request and will issue a letter to this effect to the Officer in Charge in Court.

c.         Touting Problem

Ø  As touting is still a major problem CPC has agreed to organize a campaign to stem this menace by getting the Dock Brief Students to hand our leaflets informing the public of the dangers of touts.

d.         Representations

Ø  In relation to representations to be made to the AG’s Chambers it is advisable for the representations to be submitted to the Kuala Lumpur Unit as the files are with the Unit, which will then forward the representation to the head office in Putrajaya.
