Pupillage and Petition for Admission
01. How do I know if my potential Master has a valid practising certificate?
  Check with the Bar Council (Tel: 03-20502050 – Membership Department)
02. Can my Master "move" his/her Application under Section 36(2)(a) & (b) of the LPA 1976?
  Yes.
03. Can lawyers from the firm where I am serving my pupillage be named as my Referees?
  Yes so long as they have already been called to the Malaysian Bar and have known you for more than 5 years.
04. Where do I register for the compulsory 14 days Legal Aid Service?
  At the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (Kuala Lumpur) located at the following address: 9th Floor, Wisma Kraftangan, No. 9 Jalan Tun Perak, 50050 Kuala Lumpur.
05. Can a foreigner apply for admission as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya?
  No unless he/she has Permanent Resident (PR) status.
06. I can't find the answer to my question. What do I do?
  Check out the "Pupils Pamphlet" and "Pupillage Information" under "Pupillage" in the KL Bar Website. Answers to your questions may be found there. If not, please forward your question by e-mail to indra@klbar.org.my. We will do our best to assist you.

Qualification
01. How do I know if my LL.B Degree or the University where I am pursuing my LL.B Degree is recognised?
  Check with the Legal Profession Qualifying Board, Malaysia [Board] which is located at 3rd Floor, Wisma Straits Trading, No. 2 Leboh Pasar Besar, 50050 Kuala Lumpur (Tel: 03-26910054/80 and Fax: 03-26910142). In fact any queries pertaining to qualifications that may entitle a person to become a qualified person for the purposes of the Legal Profession Act should be directed to the Board.

Setting up Practice
01. Do we need to get approval for setting up a new practice?
  Yes. You need to get the approval of the Bar Council for the use of the firm’s name.
02. Do we need to inform the KLBC when we set up a new practice? What kind of information do we need to provide?
  Yes, if the Practice is in Kuala Lumpur and after receiving approval from the Bar Council. You will have to furnish the date of commencement of the Practice, address, telephone and facsimile numbers, e-mail address, if any and a copy of the letter of approval from the Bar Council. You will also have to provide the names of all the partners (whether they are based in KL or another State if there are branch offices) and legal assistants (those based in the KL office only).

Subscription
01. When is subscription due?
  Immediately after the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the KL Bar which is held in February each year.
02. How would I know the amount fixed for subscription?
  An e-mail notification will be issued to all Kuala Lumpur Bar members after the AGM. You may also check the homepage of the KL Bar Website or e-mail ros@klbar.org.my for the information.
03. When is the last day to pay the annual subscription?
  30th June of each year.
04. Do I get a refund if I do not practise in KL for the whole year?
  You will get a refund of 50% of the subscription paid for the year only if you practise for less than 6 months in that year in KL and moving to practise in another State and are required to pay another subscription to that State Bar Committee for that year. Refund will only be given upon request in writing. There will be no refund for members who leave practice and if the subscription for the year has yet to be paid will have to do so.
05. Under what name should the cheque be made payable to?
  KUALA LUMPUR BAR COMMITTEE.
06. Do I need to pay my subscription to the KLBC if I move to another State to practise?
  Yes. If you have practised for 6 months and below in a calendar year in KL, you are required to pay only 50% of the subscription fixed for the year. If you have practised for more than 6 months, you are required to pay the full subscription.
07. Do I need to pay full subscription to the KLBC if I resume practice in KL at any part of a particular year after I have ceased practice?
  Yes, regardless of which month you resume practice, you are required to pay the full subscription for that year.
08. I am a newly admitted advocate and solicitor starting practice in KL. What is the subscription amount that I have to pay to the KLBC?
  If you start practice before 1st July, you will have to pay the full subscription fixed for that year. If you start practice after 30th June and before 1st October, you will have to pay 50% of the subscription. If you start practice after 30th September, you will be exempted from paying the subscription for that year.
09. I have not been in practice after my admission as an advocate & solicitor and intend to start practice in KL. What is the subscription amount that I have to pay to the KLBC?
  If you start practice before 1st July, you will have to pay the full subscription fixed for that year. If you start practice after 30th June and before 1st October, you will have to pay 50% of the subscription. If you start practice after 30th September, you will be exempted from paying the subscription for that year.
