Updates from KLBC (following the 3rd and 4th meeting of the KLBC 2010/11 held on 13.05.2010 and 17.06.2010 respectively)


New Court Building
The KLBC had received information that there is plan to build an additional Court building at Jalan Duta and had written to the Legal Affairs Department at the Prime Minister’s Department asking for the KLBC to be included in their planning/designing of the new Court building to provide input so that the new Court building would be built with specifications and facilities that meet the requirements of the Judiciary, the Bar and the public. The Legal Affairs Department had replied indicating that the proposed project is awaiting approval by the Unit Perancang Ekonomi and once approved the KLBC would be invited to provide views and comments for the proper planning and designing of the new Court building.


Meeting with the KL Family Court
The Family Court Unit of the Civil Court Liaison Committee had met up with the Judge and Deputy Registrar of the KL Family Court on 24.05.2010 to raise various issues pertaining to the practices at the said Court.  The notes of the meeting had been circulated to members via the e-mail.


Problems at the KL Subordinate Courts
The Civil Court Liaison Committee (CCLC) had issued a survey form seeking feedback from members on problems pertaining to the KL Subordinate Courts (Click here for the survey form). Members of the CCLC had also been taking turns to observe the running/operation of the said Courts. The problems are being compiled and a meeting with the Managing Judge is being sought to discuss the same.


Meeting with the Kuala Lumpur Prosecution Unit of the Attorney General’s Chambers
A meeting was held between the Criminal Practice Committee and the Kuala Lumpur Prosecution Unit of the Attorney General’s Chambers on 05.05.2010 to address various issues of concern. The notes of the meeting had been circulated to members via the e-mail.


Visit to Remand Centre at IPD Bukit Jalil
The Criminal Practice Committee visited the Remand Centre at IPD Bukit Jalil on 17.05.2010 to view the place and also request for a room for the Bar and the Legal Aid Centre.  A room had since been made available to the Bar and the Legal Aid Centre at the said Remand Centre.


Courtesy Call on the Director of Sungai Buloh Prison
The Criminal Practice Committee paid a courtesy call on the Director of Sungai Buloh Prison on 09.06.2010 and took the opportunity to raise a number of issues amongst which were the need to have more rooms made available on Fridays for lawyers to meet their clients as lawyers are in trial almost everyday in the week; extending the time on Fridays up to 6.00p.m. and also allowing lawyers to meet their clients on Saturdays from 9.00a.m. to 12.00noon.  An official letter on the issues raised had been sent to the Director.


Meeting with the Legal Department of the Malaysian Department of Insolvency (MDI)
A meeting was held between the Conveyancing Practice Committee and MDI on 03.06.2010 to address various issues of concern in particular pertaining to private liquidators.  A report on the meeting is being prepared for circulation to members and a follow-up meeting is being arranged.


Blood Donation Drive
The Social, Arts & Culture Committee with the assistance of the National Blood Bank is holding a Blood Donation Drive on 28.06.2010 from 10.00a.m. to 4.00p.m. at Level 1 (Lift Lobby) of the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex.


Charity Go Kart Race
The Social, Arts & Culture Committee is holding a Charity Go Kart Race on 08.08.2010 at Sepang Go Kart Circuit. (Click here for more information and the registration form).


Annual Dinner & Dance 2010
Themed “Legally Glamorous”, the Annual Dinner & Dance is confirmed to be held on 13.11.2010 at Prince Hotel & Residence, Kuala Lumpur.  The Social, Arts & Culture Committee which is undertaking this project is working out the details and more information will be provided shortly. 


KLBC/DiGi Collaboration - Exclusive Packages for KL Bar members from DiGi
As part of our continuing efforts to improve non-professional services to KL Bar members, KLBC through its Information Technology Committee had entered into a collaboration with DiGi to bring to members Exclusive Mobile and Internet (Blackberry and iPhone) Packages.  A launch was held on 15.06.2010 followed by a roadshow on 22.06.2010 at the Cafeteria, KL Court Complex, Jalan Duta.  Another roadshow will be held on 29.06.2010 from 10.00a.m. to 2.00p.m. at the same venue.  Click here for list of the exclusive plans offered by DiGi.


eCase Management
The Information Technology Committee (ITC) is undertaking a study of eCase Management that had been implemented at the High Court of Sabah & Sarawak in Kuching.  The KLBC would be sending two to three members from the ITC on a study tour to the said High Court and to also meet up with their Sarawakian counterparts to learn about their usage of IT in the conduct of their cases and law practices.


IT Law Forum
The Information Technology Committee is organising an IT Law Forum scheduled to be held in November this year. Topics intended to be discussed relate to current issues such as the Data Protection Act and the importance of Social Media on the Internet.  (More information will be provided once the details have been finalised).


Earth Day - "Old/Disused Paper Collection” Campaign
The Environmental & Humanities Committee had again carried out a “Old/Disused Paper Collection” Campaign as its 2010 Earth Day project. The Campaign was held on 20.04.2010 at the ground floor of Wisma Kraftangan.  Approximately 280kg of old/disused paper was collected for recycling.  Click here to view the report which had been posted on the KL Bar Blog.


Trip to Cherating Turtle Sanctuary
The Environmental & Humanities Committee’s first project under its Animal Rights Programme is a trip to the Cherating Turtle Sanctuary. The trip is scheduled for 17 & 18.07.2010 and all places had been taken up. Besides learning about turtles, participants of this trip will also get to release turtle hatchlings to the sea and go on a turtle watch (if weather permits).


EHC/MNS Children’s Nature Camp
Due to unforeseen circumstances the Children’s Nature Camp scheduled to be held from 11 to 13.06.2010 at FRIM in Kepong had to be postponed.  The Camp is now targeted to be held during the year-end school break in November/December.


Animal Rights Committee
The KL Legal Aid Centre had set up an Animal Rights Committee known as BULLET Committee to look into the area of education, enforcement and law reform pertaining to animal rights.


YLC Charity Night 2010
The YLC Charity Night will be held on 02.07.2010 at Gosh! Club KL, Asian Heritage Row. This year’s Charity Night will again be showcasing “Legally Talented”. Tickets at RM30.00 each (inclusive of 4 varieties of finger food and 2 drinks) are available for sale at the KL Bar Secretariat, 8th Floor, Wisma Kraftangan, No. 9 Jalan Tun Perak. Tickets will be sold at RM35.00 at the door.


“Professionals Connect” Forum
The Young Lawyers Committee was invited to participate in the above Forum held on 15.05.2010 at Dewan Auditorium Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysian Tourism Centre. The Forum
was organised by Balai Ikhtisas Malaysia (BIM), also known as the Malaysian Professional Centre, with the assistance of the Young Professionals Alliance (YPA) of which the Young Lawyers Committee is a part of. Click here to view the report which had been posted on the KL Bar Blog.


YLC Futsal
The Young Lawyers Committee organised a friendly futsal mini tournament on 21.05.2010. Held at Padang One Utama, the main purpose of this event was to allow young professionals especially our young lawyers to congregate and be acquainted with one another.  Click here to view the report which had been posted on the KL Bar Blog.


Visit to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)
The Young Lawyer Committee organised a visit to the SPCA on 05.06.2010. The objective was to raise awareness amongst lawyers in respect of animal welfare. Our lawyers who participated in the visit assisted SPCA with its daily activities which included cleaning the animal enclosures, feeding, walking, bathing and socialising with the animals. There were lawyers who donated various items to the Centre. The visit was reported in the Chinese Presses of Sin Chew Jit Poh and Guangming Daily.  Click here to view the press cuttings.


4th Legal Career Fair
The Pupils Welfare Committee is once again undertaking the task of organising the Legal Career Fair which is scheduled tentatively for 22.01.2011. (More information will be provided once the details have been worked out.)


Dialogue on the Ethics and Professional Standards Examination (Ethics Dialogue) and Workshops on Civil and Criminal Litigation for Pupils
The Pupils Welfare Committee continues to organise monthly Ethics Dialogue sessions and Civil and Criminal Litigation Workshops specifically for pupils. 


20th Sports Carnival - KL Bar vs Royal Selangor Club
The 20th Sports Carnival between the KL Bar and the Royal Selangor Club for the YA Tan Sri Dato’ Harun Hashim Challenge Trophy will be held on 08.07.2010 and 10.07.2010.  The games to be played in the Series are badminton, cricket, billiards/pool, tennis, hockey, soccer, netball and “boat race”.


Bank Negara Malaysia’s Proposed Revamp of the Third Party Bodily Injury and Death Scheme
The Bar Council Motor Insurance Review Ad Hoc Committee met the KLBC on 17.06.2010 to explain the proposed BNM scheme and the Bar Council’s concern.  State Bar Committees had been requested to organise Roadshows to educate members of the Bar and the public on BNM’s proposal and the KLBC would be organising one soon.
