Updates from KLBC (01/10)

    
 

Updates from KLBC (following the 1st and 2nd meeting of the KLBC 2010/11 held on 11.03.2010 and 08.04.2010 respectively)

Honorary Secretary for the term 2010/11
H.R. Dipendra had been appointed as the Honorary Secretary of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee for the term 2010/11.

Members co-opted to the KLBC 2010/11
Jeremiah R. Gurusamy and Choo Dee Wei had been co-opted as members of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee for the term 2010/11 under Section 73(vii) of the Legal Profession Act 1976.

Sub-committees 2010/11
12 Sub-committees had been set up and each chaired by a member of the KLBC to facilitate the organisation of the KLBC’s various activities and to cater to the needs of our KL Bar members:

1.   Civil Court Liaison Committee (Chair:  Pushpa Ratnam)
2.   Conveyancing Practice Committee (Chair: Nurul Muhaniza Hanafi)
3.   Criminal Practice Committee (Chair: Datuk Baljit Singh Sidhu)
4.   Environmental & Humanities Committee (Chair: Roger Chan Weng Keng)
5.   Information Technology Committee (Chair: Richard Wee Thiam Seng)
6.   Legal Aid (Chair: Ravinder Singh Dhalliwal)
7.   Professional Development Committee (Chair: Jeremiah R. Gurusamy)
8.   Publications Committee (Chair: H.R. Dipendra)
9.   Pupils Welfare Committee (Chair: Choo Dee Wei)
10. Social, Arts & Culture Committee (Chair: Khaizan Sharizad Ab. Razak)
11. Sports Committee (Chair: Muhendaran Suppiah)

19th Annual General Meeting of the Kuala Lumpur Bar
The KLBC had fixed the 19th Annual General Meeting of the Kuala Lumpur Bar for Thursday, 24.02.2011 at 2.00p.m.  (Please block the date in your diary.)

Annual Dinner & Dance 2010
The Annual Dinner & Dance this year is scheduled to be held on 13.11.2010 at Prince Hotel & Residence, Kuala Lumpur.  (More information will be provided once the Social, Arts & Culture Committee had worked out the details.  In the meantime, please block the date in your diary.)

Annual Meet between the KLBC and Selangor Bar Committee (“SBC”)
The Annual Meet between the KLBC and SBC was held on 09.04.2010 and this term, it was hosted by the KLBC.  The Meet was for the new members of the KLBC and SBC to get to know each other and to discuss how to work more closely to cater to the mutual needs of members of both the KL Bar and Selangor Bar.

Civil Court Liaison Committee’s Survey 2010/11
The Civil Court Liaison Committee (CCLC) had issued a survey form seeking feedback from members on problems encountered at the KL Courts and will arrange meetings with the Judiciary to try and resolve the problems. (Click here for the survey form).

Parking problems at the KL Court Complex
This is a perennial problem and the CCLC had again been tasked to try and look for ways to alleviate the problem. Last term, the shuttle service to and from the Matrade car park and the KL Court Complex was introduced but was discontinued after a short stint as it was not well received.

Meeting with the Senior Registrar of the KL Subordinate Courts
The CCLC met up with the Senior Registrar of the KL Subordinate Courts on 06.04.2010 to raise various issues pertaining to the Subordinate Courts.  At the meeting, the CCLC was informed that the e-payment system (payment through the internet) had started at the KL Courts from 15.01.2010.  (Click here for the brochure containing more information about the system).

The CCLC had also raised with the Senior Registrar the issue of outdated cause lists for the KL Subordinate Courts posted on the Kehakiman website.  The Senior Registrar had acknowledged that there were some technical problems pertaining to the posting of the cause lists and would look at how best to resolve the same.

Meeting between the Head Judges of the various Divisions of KL High Court and the Bar Council Specialist Court Committee
The KLBC Chairman and CCLC Chairperson were invited by the Bar Council Specialist Court Committee to join them for the above meeting on 02.04.2010.  Many issues were raised at the meeting amongst which were the issue of speed against quality in the hearing of cases by the Bench, Court mediation, timeline for submissions, parking, etc.  A report on the meeting is being prepared by the Bar Council Specialist Court Committee.

LHDN Briefing
The Conveyancing Practice Committee (CyPC) attended a briefing by the LHDN on 26.03.2010 on Stamp Duty and Assessments, the Real Property Gain Tax Act, E-filing and Form processing.  However, due to time constraints, the CyPC did not have the opportunity to raise issues of concern at the briefing.  The CyPC is liaising with the LHDN for another briefing and to discuss the issues of concern.

Legal Aid Room at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex
The Legal Aid Room at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex had been relocated from Level 5, Left Wing to Level 1, room on the right wing behind the main lobby.  The new location was found to be more accessible to the Legal Aid clients and the public.  (Click here for the location map).

Sponsorship to attend the 15th Malaysian Law Conference
The KLBC had decided to sponsor 10 young lawyers (7 years and below in practice) and 10 pupils of the KL Bar to attend the 15th Malaysian Law Conference that is scheduled to take place from 29 to 31 July 2010 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.  (Click here for more information).
