PDC Talk on Humour and the Law on 20.08.2010
As part of its Professional Development Programme, the PDC is pleased to present the above talk by Mr. P S Ranjan on 20.08.2010 (Friday) at 4.00pm. Venue: KL Bar Auditorium.
As a first-year law student, Mr P S Ranjan saw some evidence of humour in the law: a fellow student had given the following answer to a question regarding the place of the making of a contract in a case of acceptance by post of a offer:-
“The place where the contract was made was the letter box”.
And while studying the law of evidence, he came across a defamation case in which the defendant had painted a portrait of his sister and her husband and gave it the title “Beauty and the Beast”.
More than 30 years ago, Mr Ranjan saw a circular from the only Deputy Registrar of the High Court in Malaya at that time (he was later to become a Chief Justice of the Federal Court) Lawyers were requested to submit material to the Deputy Registrar regarding the subject of humour and the law as he wanted to write a book on the subject. At last, Mr Ranjan would like to make a contribution in the hope of seeing the book published. Mr Ranjan would like to join the Procrastinators Society of America (their motto is “We are behind you all the time”). However, true to form, he has not got round to it yet.
According to the Peter Principle, a lawyer has reached the level of his incompetence when he tells funny stories instead of getting on with the job. At the risk of being confirmed incompetent, Mr. Ranjan will refer to (mostly) true stories during his talk entitled “Humour and the Law”
