Legal Aid aims to implement three purposes:
- upholding justice
- acting in the public interest; and
- representing the needy.
2. Who does Legal Aid?
The LAC has a full-time Secretariat and part-time volunteer lawyers who in implementing the three purposes help those who need legal services and are disadvantaged, marginalised and truly deserving. They are supported by pupils performing compulsory Legal Aid duty.
3. Thinking of serving the community?
Please come and sign up with the LAC. The Volunteer Sign-up Form is below; please print it out and send it to us. There are many ways you can help in our programs. We welcome both lawyers and non-lawyers to help us deliver our services, as volunteers or especially as supervisors for programs. We would be grateful for whatever the number of hours a month you are willing to commit to.
4. How can I get immediate help from the LAC? What
are the programs and where and when
are the offered?
The LAC gives on-the-spot legal advice and legal representation, or arranges for legal representation at the LAC Clinic, Syariah Clinic, Dock Brief Program and Sungai Buloh / Kajang Women's Prison Clinic. These programs helps with problems such as with the Police or the Immigration Department, Divorce, being beaten-up by your husband, sacked by your employer or kicked out by your landlord, not having legal representation, or where required by general public interest or in the interest of justice.
You can walk-in or come to or ask for assistance at
these programs.

5. What else does the LAC do?
The LAC also runs many other programs (discussed below).
6. Will I need to pay anything?
The lawyers work for free but you must pay expenses
and court fees.
7. If lawyers are FREE here, why do people still
go to paid lawyers?
We are funded by a small yearly subscription from each
practising lawyer. We do not receive any government funding.
Our volunteer lawyers do not charge any fees, but the
number of volunteer lawyers is small. Our financial and
manpower resources are very limited and we can therefore
only offer legal aid to the truly deserving.
If you can afford to pay a lawyer, or your case involves
motor accidents, or purely financial matters such as
debt-collection or a personal guarantee, we regret that
we cannot help you. If you cannot afford to pay a lawyer,
or your case involves actual or threatened physical
or emotional harm, or criminal punishment other than
the death penalty or a life sentence, or family law
or employment law matters, we will be glad to help.
8. How does the LAC decide whether I can afford
to pay a lawyer for legal services?
We have a "means test" for persons who wish
to be given free legal representation (and also for
free advice at the LAC Clinic). Our guidelines on your
ability to pay a lawyer are roughly as follows:
- Your net monthly income after
certain allowed living expenses cannot exceed
RM650 per month (for single) or RM900 per month (for a couple); or
- You own property worth RM45,000
or more; or
- You own a car worth more than
RM10,000 or a motorcycle worth more than
RM4,500 (unless it is necessary
for your job or business).
You will be required to give information and supporting
documents, and sign a declaration regarding your income
and assets.
9. Can I apply for legal advice or representation
for someone else?
Yes, but you must provide full information on the person,
and the person must be interviewed personally.
