GEDC & YLC Forum on #MeToo, Whats Next? on 10 July 2018

Inspired by the #MeToo global movement, the KLBC Gender Equality & Diversity Committee (GEDC) and the Young Lawyers Committee (YLC), invites you to attend the “#MeToo, What’s Next?” Forum, this Tuesday, 10th July, 2018.

Issues of sexual harassment is a symptom of inequitable and unsafe workplaces for employees. The Association of Women Lawyers’ Baseline Survey 2014 on “Sexual Propositioning” indicated that 17 of the 42 female respondents, and 3 of the 19 male respondents had been on the receiving end of sexual propositions before.

“In the case of female lawyers, they also reported receiving sexual propositions from various categories of persons, including a judge and figures of authorities such as prison guards and police officers who wolf whistled and sexually harassed the lawyer concerned in the course of her duty to see her client for criminal cases.” (https://klbar.org.my/wp-conte…/…/2018/07/AWLBAseline.pdf)

It is pertinent to highlight that the Bar Council by Circular No. 54/2007 dated 2.3.2007, notified members of the implementation of the “Code of Practice on the Prevention and Eradication of Sexual Harassment in the Workplace” and declared the complaints mechanism to be in force with effect from 1.3.2007. One decade has since passed. Has this mechanism been effective in providing redress?

Come and join our panel discussion on how the #MeToo movement may be harnessed to effect positive change within the legal profession. We call upon you to take part in our online survey and welcome your feedback and questions.

Let us spark off conversations and formulate strategies to create safe and supportive spaces for people to come forward with their stories. We need to unravel the misunderstanding between the sexes.

Let us foster solidarity and support for individuals who have suffered sexual assault and harassment, #MeToo needs you.
